What is this great trip about ?

Let me get this straight: Isabelle is Xavier's cousin, i.e. my cousin. (We're both French, 25 & 29 years old). Isa's keen on sports and loves horses. I'm fond of travelling and listening to music, recording and sound processing.
Isa would always say "Someday, I'll ride my own horse in mongolia". For myself, I had decided to go to Syria (a fantastic & beautiful country) on my bicycle, so that I could really meet the people there. We made a mixture of the two dreams, and decided to extend it to Beijing. After a while, the everyday life was so nice that we thought: why not do a world tour by the way. And that's what we're doing now (taking care of our money every day of course, 'cos it's much longer). So, after visiting Italy, Sicily, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, india, (plane) mongolia, China, we wanted to see: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapour (plane), Brazil (plane), Portugal, Spain, France.
One thing we looooooooooove: music; traditional if possible. So we aim to offer some extracts of our recordings on this web site.
Of course, as many of those countries are really beautiful, we made a web page dedicated to photos.

Any question ? Please click here to write us a mail, in english of course (we also speak Spanish, and a little bit of Italiano, Arabie, Turkie, a few words of Farsi, but English is easier).

A few last things:
- Till Vietnam, no problem on our bicycles, eventhough we've been riding 14 months, 14500 km (it's not an exploit, we know it. It's nice though).
- We left Paris on 1999, July the 10th and expect to be back in Paris on 2001, March the 31th

For us, that's the RIGHT way:

That should make about 20 000 km, on the whole,
thru Italy, Sicily, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, india, (plane) mongolia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapour (plane), Brazil (plane), Portugal, Spain, France.

We made our best to find beautiful musics:

So you'd better take some time to download some of them, store them on a very specific folder, called 'World Music' for example, download Winamp if you don't have it yet, set Repeat-Shuffle, press play , close your eyes, and dream...
Most of the extracts last 2 minutes, but it's enough to make you think "I'd rather go there".

Go there... Go there... Go WHERE ? France, Italy, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, india, Mongolia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Brazil, Portugal, Spain.

FRANCE

Some of you use the cable/ADSL... Then do download this file: compilfrance.zip, containing all the mp3 musics we recorded in France (and some french ones from Syria).

MONGOLIA A major characteristic of those people: spontaneity

  • Did you know that Isa and I chose music as a main theme for our trip after we had heard those incredible warm musics ? this particular one is called xoomi or chomij  ; Size: 990 ko
  • That one comes from the middle of nowhere too, in the mongolian Steppe : Ulan Tsut Galaan  ; Size: 1387 kb
  • You know, when you're invited under the ker, you cannot refuse the alcohol And you sing before drinking...
    10 times a day; Size: 541 kb
  • After my 500 lonely kilometers in the Steppe, on my bike, after Isa's 2 weeks on her horses, we came back to UlanBataar and recorded these 4-forms-of-xoomi  ; Size: 1354 kb. That one is a MASTERPIECE. Do DOWNLOAD it  ! We also got this woman's voice  ; Size: 1128 kb. Later, we saw them all on the national TV, singing the same very typical songs.

CHINA

  • It looks like it's the end of the trip. Fortunately, we liked travelling so much that we decided to keep on riding. After Beijing, we reached Shanghai and Suzhou: As you will hear, the singer's chineese tone is slightly different there. And the poem sounds like a song ; Size: 1173 kb
  • Down in the South of China, above Guilin, in the dong village we were invited to a private concert (Size: 637 kb), as Cooper (20kb) will tell you.

This very tiny instrument only has two cords . I like its sound 'cos I feel it's weak and innocent; Size: 1143 kb
  • But, to be frank, before that magic concert, the evening started the wrong way in Ping Po: we heard that strange sound, as graceful as an elephant walk ; 252 ko; the microphone couldn't help saturating.
Then we went back to Cheng Yang with our dear friend Cooper (who likes the elephant-like music). All of a sudden, in our friend's house, the women started singing; 1261 ko. It was a kind of magic.

VIETNAM: the richest's country we've seen, so far...for music.
    • While Sony's Service Center in Hanoi was destroying our Digital Video Camera (they said they would fix it), we followed some advise from the "HANOI NATIONAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC": on our bikes we arrived to Hoa Binh, and met the musicians; after 5 minutes, the microphones were plugged into the MiniDisc-Recorder, and they started to introduce their culture: the gong concert Size: 666 kb
    • Then came the lullaby (my favourite)  ; Size: 1459 kb
(it's a heavy file because I didn't want to lose too much of it's quality)
    • Here is finally a music from the South of Vietnam, from Phan Rang. Don't you think it's got something arabic (like the music from Tunis: soufisfax.mp3 for example) ? Size: 683 ko

French Site >> Table Of Content >> Why travelling ? >> Other Travellers English e-Mails >> Listen to our musics ?

    CAMBODIA:
    • In the Fine Arts University of Pnom Penh, 10 students invited us for this concert. We shared it into two parts, to help you download it. Both are as interesting. Queue them on winamp and use the repeat mode (if you like).

      part one: cambodge-pnompenh-10instruments-concert1.mp3 ; Size: 947 kb

part TWO: cambodge-pnompenh-10instruments-concert2.mp3; Size: 1.20 Mb

    • We had a little problem with one of our nicest Mini-Disc. So, don't expect too many recordings.
    • However, the few recordings we have are interesting: they give a rather precise idea of the traditional music you can find, in the street (cambodge-pp-concert-rue.mp3, 673 kb) or elsewhere.

in THAILAND, you smile when you mean "hello"
    • If you come to Bangkok, you'll probably hear from time to time that tiny typical instrument, called Sa-Ou ; size: 383 kb. The sound is not very pure, I'm afraid, but I couldn't ignore that instrument alone surrounded by aggressive motorbikes. I find it touching, that's all.

    • Then comes the rock band, from the Thai Cultural Center. It was an exciting day, with music everywhere, and those musicians (Pong Lar, from the North East) enjoyed playing their ancestors' instruments on newer rythms; size: 1.16 Mb.
They saw very quickly I enjoyed it a great deal, so they also played a "solo with two intruments" ( size: 721 kb), and their favourite one, played with a Kan: they call it "the bee" ; size: 816 kb. I don't speak Thai at all, so they had to look just like bee and say "BZZZZZ".
    • We left Bangkok in a hurry as usual, took a bus and arrived in Song-Khla (south of Thaïland) the following day. We went to the University (Thaïland Cultural Center) to meet some music teachers. At first, they let us watch and record a lesson with Sao-Ou and Gratanee (2 strings instrument and xylophon), Size: 823 kb; listen to the discreete voice-like flute in the background; the day after, they all organised an exciting concert in a beautiful old fashioned wooden house. When we listen to the music they played there, we feel like cobras turned on the Pee-Naï's charm ; Size=1,53 mo.

MALAYSIA, with its jungle, monkeys and tigers.

Another incredible night we'll never forget
    • In kota-Baru's tourist office, they said "There's water everywhere, big floods; don't even try to go to Gua Musang".
So we rode the bikes to Goa Musang and then Kuala Betis, and, deep in the jungle: Lambo. Some Orang Asli tribes live in that "village" (2 houses), and they said OK for playing the following evening. We decided to set a big wood fire. The children helped us to collect the wood and immediately began to play with bamboo sticks; Size: 544 kb . Then the neighbourssss came with another enormous bamboo they cut, using saw and axe; Size: 889 kb (you'll hear the jungle sounds at night, while they are sawing). After the sunset, everyBODY began to sing and dance, including us ; Size: 1365 kb. Another incredible night we'll never forget !

  • I keep on saying: music is a magical theme when travelling. Belkacem, French friend, knows everything about Kuala-Lumpur's cultural life: "you'd better meet Halim, a music teacher at Malaya University: he and his band play really interesting Thai old music". (Let's be more specific, most of the following musics were writen in Thailand during the 30ies, adapted by the Malaysian band Kapica (in the 90ies), and sang at Malaya University).
On the phone, Mr. Halim speaking:
"You want to record ? Ok, come today, 3.30 pm". So I rode my bike on the highway to the university, and listened with a great pleasure to the girls' voices (Dikir Rabat; Size: 1.44 Mb) and other songs.
"What do you mean << you'll make a cd out of this >> ? Please, come tomorrow: I'll gather my real band, not my students". So the next day, they played Dikir Ramyong (Size: 1.4 Mb), Dikir Juara (for the new millenium) (Size: 1.58 Mb), Karut Cepat (Size: 1.44 Mb), Karut Matang (Size: 1.37 Mb).
Mr. Halim is the kind of man who would make you like any kind of music. When those ones are sang, the singers move as if they were dancing and playing with a kite at the same moment: so graceful !

    BRAZIL, its Carnival and joy.

    • Let's be clear: you might enjoy OUR recordings, but for those brazilian ones, only thank Isa and Scott: Isa is the one who brought the Mini-Disk Recorder in the Salsa School (Size: 493 kb), and all around, in Rio de Janeiro. That evening, they were rehearsing for the Carnival 2001. - the sound is slightly saturated, but it was more or less the same in everyBODY's ears, thanks to the tremendous loudspeakers.

Scott Alexander's shot on the Brazilian transes Another day, she climbed up the Lapa Stairs, covered with azulejos from the entire world; there, she met Pedro and Ivan, who were playing harmonica (Size: 999 kb), and drums on a cheap and broken chair (Size: 1241 kb) and finally, singing (Size: 1243 kb).

    • In Salvador, we met Scott, a great and tireless guy, fond of Capuera. But the point is he was looking for south american musics and dances and making video reports about all those; here is an extract of one of his recordings (Size: 961 Mb).
By the way, if you want some more information about his video work, do write him !

    PORTUGAL, with thousands of musics.

    Nice way to say GOODBYE
    • After a short flight, we were dropped in Lisboa. Thanks to Isabelle's inquiries, we found a nice musicologist who agreed to spend a whole afternoon with us and with his 307 wifes. That's the way he calls his 307 guitars. Taking a beautiful portugueese one, he gave us his voice and his passion (Size: 1.15 Mb); after a short while, he lead us to that Taverna de Juliao, where he and his friends play every evening (Size: 259 kb). Then, one by one, some customers sang Fado Tango (Size: 1.01 Mb) and Mercado da Ribeira (Size: 1.21 Mb).

Step by step, you're getting to the point: in Lisboa, the Fado expresses mostly sadness.

    • Following Isa's portugueese friends' advise, we got to Coimbra, the mythic and warmful town for european students. Janeth (portugo-american) took good care of us. She introduced us to Patrick, the Golden Voiced Man. His band's rallying symbol (Size: 252 kb) opened a magic session:
during his rehearsal (with his band) we lived some of the most intense moments of the trip: here are his musics: rather heavy files: I could not shorten or compress them any more, otherwise, you'd be the victims, wouldn't you ?
    Senhora Lua (Size: 2.09 Mb),
Assim mesmo é que é (Size: 1.01 Mb),
    Serenata Domondigo (Size: 1.04 Mb),
    Numa Noite (Size: 1.54 Mb),
    Noite Serena (Size: 1.84 Mb),
Encadeia -short version- (Size: 1.4 Mb... but you'd better download that one, if you're not fed up yet with waiting Encadeia -long version- Size: 2.1 Mb),
and a special totally private concert, just for friendship: with Pedro Luna playing guitar (Size: 1.1 Mb).
Unfortunately, those harmonious hours ended too quickly, with a farewell to friends (Size: 1.27 Mb).

As usual, if you use the cable/ADSL, here is compilportugal.zip, containing all the best mp3 musics we recorded in Portugal. NB: It's a heavy file: 53 Mb.

    SPAIN, Salamanca, Euskadi.

    • For us, Spain and Portugal were the beginning of Europe. At first sight, hospitality is nonesense here. However, a few days in Coïmbra, Salamanca and Uzurbil (Euskadi) helped us to believe THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS. Saul, Iker and Lukasz+girlfriend opened their home after a short discussion. When they knew more about the bike-trip, understood our search, they invited their best friend to play guitar (Size: 1.03 Mb). The concert started at 2:00 am. As you can see, he's strongly influenced by his gipsy teacher, and his style is closer to flamenco than to the one of Salamanca. After a few other pieces (Size: 1.2 mo) with percussions, we all got to the river to listen to an improvisation in the open air (Size: 699 ko); it lasted till 5 am.

    • A few miles away from Salamanca-la-Maravillosa, we found by chance a small and joyful 50 years old guy: Juanxo. He's the center of Euskadi, the Pais Basco: he and his friends Fernan' and Tomas gathered on a hill; they brought their txalaparta (Size: 1.38 mo): the three wooden beams instrument is to be hit with loud drumsticks. Two young virtuosi play together, challenging each other with frantic rythms.
In the old days, the txalaparta allowed people to communicate from hill to hill with specific rythms and melodies, announcing cider parties, births, weddings, deaths. The heavy mobile phone of the last millenium...
Spending a wonderful time with all those Basque friends, we also undestood their music might be a vector for communication, but it mostly constitutes a way of sharing joy and happiness.

As usual, if you use the cable/ADSL, here is compilespagne.zip, containing all the best mp3 musics we recorded in Spain. NB: It's a heavy file: 19 Mb.

As I said before, that's all Folks ! But I promise, I'll put more music on line as soon as I compress them, if I survive to my lingering heavy traveller's tummy... Inch'Allah !
